My Students
Five years ago, my 5th grade students should have been enjoying Kindergarten, but instead they were experiencing the hardships of Hurricane Katrina. They have overcome so many things since then, but many are still far behind in math. Help them catch up by making math fun and exciting!
I teach 26 Fifth graders at one of the charter schools that opened in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina.
They attend a school with a mission to embrace diversity and acceptance of others. They are African American, Vietnamese, and Hispanic. Many of the students come from homes where often issues related to poverty are focused on, while education is less of a concern. They each have unique learning styles and many are visual and kinesthetic learners. They have overcome so many obstacles already in their young lives, but they have high hopes and optimism that they can achieve success if they work hard. They are children who will prove that no disaster can stop someone from going places, doing great things, and achieving their dreams.
My Project
Math is one area where many of my students are behind grade level. The resources I am requesting will be used to make math fun and exciting on a daily basis in our classroom. Interactive board games, card games, and computer math games will engage students in learning. Math manipulatives will help strengthen their skills in basic math facts, fractions, and probability. Hands-on learning materials will bring math to life in the classroom while helping my students finally solidify their basic math skills. With these resources math will become something they feel confident in doing, and they will go on to middle school feeling empowered to be successful in math.
Please help me give my students the tools they need to become successful in math.
Our school does not have the budget to buy supplies like this, and I know my students will make great gains when they have the opportunity to see how fun learning math can be. My students are special, they are the babies of Katrina, and they deserve every chance we can give them to put a smile on their faces. This gift will put smiles on their faces, and help make them a success story, not a sad news story.
