This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Math can be tricky when you haven't been given the opportunity to explore the concepts behind the rules. Imagine driving aimlessly knowing only the directions, but not your destination or starting point. For many of my students, frustration with math can become a very disheartening roadblock.
Many of my fourth graders are struggling with basic mathematical conceptual knowledge, computational skills and number sense.
Because number sense plays such a vital role in a student's mathematical abilities, and it is generally gained by third grade, my students are already working with a disadvantaged that we must eliminate this year to get them on the road to success!
My scholars are bright eyed and eager fourth graders from an underserved and poverty stricken urban area in North Philadelphia. They face many challenges, but arrive into my classroom filled with potential and ready to learn. However,to succeed during our time together, and beyond, they need the right tools to do so.
My Project
The requested math manipulatives will allow my students to explore math in a hands on approach that will give them the opportunity to discover mathematical knowledge on their own terms and at their own varying paces. Bright blocks, counters, center games and dice will add fun to a challenging time of our day and hopefully inspire my students to keep on learning!
I am confident that these materials can help my scholars become the excellent students they strive to be!
Your donations will not only buy my scholars great tools for learning mathematics, but it will afford them the opportunity to open the doors to their own math fluency in our classroom.
The education gap is quite obvious in our school and it is of so much importance that we all work to close that gap! Engaging math materials can aid in the goal of our students' ultimate success!
