Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I'm a first year teacher and all of my students have something great to offer, but not all of them have been motivated to learn math. I have been slowly building their confidence so that they will believe in their mathematical thinking and participate more in class.

One day, I borrowed some dry erase boards from a seasoned teacher and I had groups of four students work on integer problems together, then hold up their dry erase boards.

The students loved it! They loved working with groups to solve problems because it took the pressure off of their shoulders and they weren't afraid to be wrong. They also liked competing with the other groups to see who would answer it the fastest and who would get the right answer.

Now, they always ask if we can do that activity again, thus I'm hoping to get a set of my own small dry erase boards so we can continue to learn math in a way that is fun for the whole class.

Another thing that really motivates the students are Jolly Ranchers. It might sound silly to an adult, but these kids will absolutely work harder for these little candies. I like to give them to students who are on task and start the warm-up right away and to brave students who ask questions during the lesson.

I tried to instill in them that it's not about being right or wrong but just having the motivation or desire to learn more than what you knew yesterday.
