Making Math Concrete in an Abstract World

My students need tools to physically model and manipulate problems and to support their concrete understanding of math concepts.

My Students

My students are my heart. They are kind. They are curious. They are driven. Many of them have never traveled outside of our small, rural community in South Mississippi. Some of the best parts of their day are their experiences at school. At school, they are loved. At school, they are exposed to places and ideas that open their minds to the world of possibilities outside their own limited view. At school, dreams for a future are born!

For my students, school is their hope.

It is where they come to find out who they are and who they will become. My classroom is the launching pad to the bright future I envision for them--the one I am working to help them envision for themselves.

My Project

Technology resources provide new opportunities and exposures for students, but some learning is better suited for in-person, physical experience. Daily "screen time" is at an all-time high for many students, who spend hours per day on computers, tablets, or video games. I would like to promote physical and tactile interaction rather than relying solely on computerized or paper-pencil methods.

For students to understand complex math concepts, they need to physically manipulate the variables.

These hands on tools will provide visual and tactile models for younger learners, helping to solidify their conceptual understanding of abstract mathematical concepts.

Physically manipulating fraction circles will provide students with a visual to compare them. They will actually be able to see and feel that 1/4 is smaller than 1/3. Creating a hexagon out of two trapezoid pattern blocks will help students understand the attributes of both shapes and also that two halves make a whole. With these tools, my lessons will reach students at a deeper level by providing them with experiences to build their conceptual understanding. A solid foundation in these concepts will make them more successful as they move on to more complex topics in the future.
