Making Math Come Alive

My students need a class set of Hands-On Equations to help them understand solving equations better and an Algebra Experiment resource to help bring data to life.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Solving equations is the foundation to many math classes, as well as a fundamental skill that's used in science. Many of my students struggle to understand the concepts behind how to solve an equation. They need hands-on activities to help make the abstract concrete.

I teach mainly 9th graders at an inner city charter high school in California.

Almost all of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch because of their low income status. Our school is a small charter school that is struggling financially but making huge strides with our population. My students come into high school with very negative feelings towards school and especially math. They come in years behind grade level but grow so much with a little bit of motivation and structure.

My Project

I'm asking for a class set of Hands-on Equation manipulatives that include activities that I can do with the students to help them understand the concepts behind solving equations. With this class set, students will be able to literally move around game pieces on a pretend scale so that they can visualize how they are solving an equation rather than just seeing random numbers and symbols moving around on their papers. I am also requesting a book on Algebra Experiments of the Non-linear kind. I will use these experiments to help students get real-life data and analyze the results.

Imagine a line full of symbols and numbers that may as well be a foreign language- a language that is necessary for you to understand.

This is what it's like for my students when they see equations or data that means nothing to them. My students need to learn more than just route memorization of algorithms- they need to understand the real concepts behind what we're doing. They need to see the power that Algebra has in real life. Help open up a whole new world to my students!
