My students need books, index cards and games for their math and science instruction to help them increase fact fluency, build math skills and enable hands-on learning.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Can we do centers today?!" I've come to realize that centers are my students' favorite part of the day. Whether they get to play a buddy game, work with hands-on materials and manipulatives, or work with technology, they are always excited to explore math in different ways.
I will have the pleasure of teaching approximately 50 hardworking students this year.
My school serves a primarily low-income and poverty filled population. Many students at our school come into our classrooms lacking personal experience with different math and science concepts. A lot of their background knowledge is limited to their experiences at home, in their neighborhood, or on TV. Our school is one that is dedicated to providing these deserving children with a high-quality, meaningful education.
My Project
The materials provided will greatly increase the quality of the math centers in my classroom. I currently have to purchase and create many of these resources on my own, but this project will get my kids so excited to learn! They will each be able to create their own personal set of multiplication flash cards and store them in their own index card container.
In addition, the math games and books will allow them to interact and explore math hands-on. Many of these games will challenge them to be creative and really force them to think deeply.
Finally, the science games and books will help me supplement science lessons. The books can be introduced into my daily lessons and still be available for the kids to check out from the library. When I teach about rocks, the kids can actually hold onto and see what I am teaching about. Seeing the solar system in full scale will help solidify the knowledge of this concept for my kids. Bringing science ALIVE in the classroom is my ultimate goal.
This project can help me take my instruction and classroom environment from basic, to extraordinary.
My kids already have the pleasure of working with technology on a daily basis because of previous donations, but I want to help them experience math and science in a more realistic and meaningful way. These hands-on games and activities will make this a reality.
