Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students with multiple disabilities are funny, smart, and curious and present with cognitive, physical, behavioral, and emotional needs. Each student brings an enormous amount of joy to the group, as well as the challenge of creating a dynamic personalized learning environment. Many of my students also have medical needs, and keeping them healthy and safe is a big part of my job.

We celebrate every step forward, no matter how small!

Students are working on individualized education plan goals, life skills, communication systems, and social skills. My classroom staff and I strive to create an environment where students feel safe taking risks and families feel included and supported.

My Project

We love to do artwork in our class!! My students are working on using classroom tools, overcoming tactile defensiveness and learning their colors, and art projects are the perfect way to practice all three. We also enjoy trying different art styles while learning about famous painters like Yayoi Kusama and Frida Kahlo.

In order to keep our art juices flowing we need supplies!

In addition to paint and googly eyes, we need a space where we can keep our artwork safe while it dries. Currently we leave it on the stairs, but there have been a few accidents and we want to be able to show our masterpieces to our families.

To encourage communication we add printed picture symbols to help label our artwork. Using symbols, students can start beginning storytelling and practice connecting picture symbols to objects/people/places.
