Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the brand new librarian here, and am delighting in getting to know our students. I am most impressed by the diversity of the students and staff, and the amazing, safe, supportive family they have created here.
Almost two thirds of our school family are classified as economically disadvantaged, and almost half of them are English Language Learners, but here, they are simply sweet, caring children, ready to soak up knowledge.
Even if they come into a classroom a little jaded, they are easily won over with acceptance and a new activity.
As economically disadvantaged students, our children have fewer opportunities to experience new an alternative ways of learning. In our ever-changing world, this lack of opportunity can put our students at a disadvantage in a future job market. In addition to maintaining the caring, family atmosphere at our school, it is our job to prepare them for an amazing future. We must provide them with experiences that will assure them, as we already know, that they are just as capable of excelling as any other students.
My Project
Thanks to generous DonorsChoose.org donations, and a grant, we have a working makerspace in my library! It is so exciting to see the looks on student's faces as they experience or create something new for the first time. Over the past month, I have heard students say thing like, "It works!" or "Maybe if you try it that way?" or, my favorite, "Now I know how electricity works!" But all of this creativity requires organization!
My students need organizational materials to teach them responsibility, and more creative materials to keep them making!
I am constantly amazed at how respectful my students are with our new materials. If I provide a way for them to clean up - they will do it - but I am constantly looking for new ways to organize so that they can spend more time making, experimenting and learning, and less time distributing and cleaning up materials. It would be so much easier if I could provide each student with a tray for his or individual project! I also have a some sets of materials where just a few more, would make it easier to distribute fairly. Ozobots and kinetic sand are some of my students' favorites, but sometimes they have to wait in groups that too large to get a chance to use them.
We have come a long way in a short time to provide my library students with a makerspace to learn and grow in. These new materials will help students to continue to value and protect what has been given to them, and give them more time to make amazing creations and discoveries!
