Making Magnetic Magic: Exploring Geometry in Kindergarten With Magna-Tiles

My Students

We are a kindergarten classroom of 21 students in Alaska. My students attend a diverse neighborhood school of about 260 students. We have no buses; everyone (myself included) lives within walking distance. This helps build a strong sense of community. It is a Title I school, with many students coming from low-income families. Every student can receive free breakfast and lunch.

I want my students to have the same opportunities and learning experiences as other children in an engaging, hands-on environment.

My kindergarteners are thinkers. We shift our focus throughout our day, but they have many roles. I tell them from day 1 you are an artist, an author, an illustrator, a mathematician, a scientist, a friend. They come to school every day seeking a connection and wanting to learn. My students are special because they have a strong desire to do their best every day, even if they come from challenging circumstances.

My Project

These materials will be useful for students to build and learn mathematical concepts in a fun way.

Using hands-on materials keeps the students engaged and excited to learn!

Allowing students to learn through exploration promotes self-directed learning. These supplies will help my students with problem solving skills and cooperative learning. I am asking for these materials to allow students the opportunity to build structures with the 100 piece set of translucent magnetic tiles.

Thanks to a previously funded DonorsChoose.org project, my students have already been introduced to Magna-Tiles. They are loved by all of my students, I am only limited by the amount that we have available to use. Many students want access to the Magna-Tiles, but I am limited to letting 2-4 students use them at a time. Another set would allow for more students to participate, learning valuable geometric and engineering concepts. Students also have to problem solve and work together to bring their structures to life. The learning experiences with the Magna-Tiles will be further enhanced by our light table, which allows for students to utilize the Magna-Tiles' translucent design and have a large, designated work space.

The Magna-Tiles Master Set will be used during math, centers, and play time. This will give students multiple opportunities throughout the day to use them and learn to work as a team. The durability of the Magna-Tiles will allow students in my classroom to use them for years to come. We are very excited for the endless possibilities for learning the Magna-Tiles Master Set will provide!
