Making Little Hands Strong

My students need 15 items such as tweezers, therapy putty, sand, scissors, containers for sand, and balls for squeezing.

We are a moderate to severe special education class at a title one school in Utah. In my class we work on the basic reading, math, writing, but also focus on life skills that will make the quality of life of my students and their families better.

Most of my students come from low income families that lack education to know how to help their child. They try very hard, but often do not come to school with the basic necessities. I would love for more community support, but often my students parents are barely making it themselves.

After lunch in our class we focus on fine motor activities that can strengthen their hands and give some sensory integration. We have been using some items that we have in class, but I would love to be able to expand it during that time. Many of the items build hand strength by squeezing them, other items use tweezers to pick items up, and we also focus on their tactile needs. Most of the items will allow for them to build their hand strength that they do not get from activities at home. These items include tweezers, therapy putty, sand, containers for sand and balls for squeezing. For my students, to better access their peers being independent with their fine motor skills is very important.

With your help, my students will be able to learn how to use their hands to gain more independence. Other students will be able to strengthen their hands to improve their handwriting. Handwriting skills makes being in regular eduction a more rewarding experience.
