This school year ended with my students learning from home from a notebook completing paper and pencil activities. This is not typical for Kindergarten. We have been told to start preparing for a hybrid model of school for the fall. This means that some students would come to school a couple days a week and then complete online lessons at home the rest of the week. Students would be divided into groups so that the entire class would not be in school all at the same time. When students are in school they need to have their own supplies with little to no sharing. They also need to have supplies for learning activities available to them at home.
Kindergarteners love school and they love to learn.
Providing them with creative and safe ways to learn while they are at school and while they are at home is going to be a challenge. When the challenge is meet these kindergarteners who are experiencing school for the first time while develop great memories and a solid foundation for the rest of their school career.
My Project
The COVID 19 pandemic has changed education in many ways. When school starts in the fall, students will be learning both at home and at school. They will need to have supplies that travel back and forth to school and they need to be able to stay organized so that they are not losing their papers. The binders will allow me to put papers and learning charts in a safe spot. I will be able to quickly change out materials as new learning takes place. These binders will also serve as a valuable home to school communication tool between myself and parents. Using the pencil boxes I will be able to create individual boxes of manipulatives for each student to use. Manipulatives are made of plastic so I will easily be able to disinfect them on a regular basis. With each student having their own manipulatives students will not have to share and worry about passing germs. They will also be able to take their tools home with them to use on the days they are learning from home. Students will be able to use the notebooks and composition books to journal about their feelings and things that they are going through both at home and at school.
Kindergarteners are experiencing school for the first time and it should be full of fun learning experiences.
Unfortunately with learning at home taking place some of these fund experiences are not going to take place. Hopefully these supplies will allow me to make school and learning a little more interesting and engaging for my students.
