Learning to read is made easier when it's a multisensory process. Therefore, my kindergarten teachers and I are requesting materials to create magnetic letter work mats. One part of our daily phonics lesson is to create word chains through the use of moveable letters. Through the use of these work mats students are able to see, hear, and move as they are guided through the lesson.
The magnetic letters provide multisensory engagement that will help our teaching stick for our students!
Word chaining involves students in spelling a given word and then being told to change one letter or sound in order to create a new word. The process of chaining gives students much needed practice in both decoding (reading) the words they made and encoding (spelling) the words they are told to make with their magnetic letters. Students are eager to make the changes in the words and be the first to read or spell the new word. Magnetic letters help to engage our students in learning to read and spell in a multisensory way.
