My Students

I have a fun-loving and excited-about-learning class of students this year that work very well together. They are a pretty young group of 5th graders, and most of them will be 10 until this summer. There are 21 boys and 10 girls, so we do a lot of moving and talking in our large and small groups. I try to keep lessons entertaining, engaging, and encourage "Think Time".

Giving others "Think Time," and the quiet it requires, can be very difficult for a sizable group of children in my class with ADHD behaviors.

These children have been classmates since K4, so they are used to accommodating for loud outbursts, students dancing and bouncing near them, and other impulsive behaviors we see daily. But now they are in 5th grade, and the expectations for independent work and quiet space to concentrate are higher than ever before. The impulsive kiddos know that their behaviors are disruptive and make efforts to control them, but it can be very difficult.

I am very excited about the desire this group of students have to do well in school this year. Many of them have already made great gains in Reading and Math.

My Project

There are six students with diagnosed ADHD in my classroom and five others that are undiagnosed. There is constant noise and energy flowing through the room which can be unsettling for students that need peace and quiet to concentrate best.

The two pair of headphones and two weighted blankets (2 pounds each) that are used daily by all students are not enough.

The two pound blanket works for two of the students but is not heavy enough for the others.

The headphones are shared by all students. Some need the headphones to make the noise in their heads quiet and others need them to keep the sound of neighbors quiet. Both groups need them to be able to concentrate and focus.

When I asked the students who would like a pair of the headphones if they could have one to use every day, 20 hands went up immediately.
