Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my school are caring and like to take control of their learning. My school has adopted an inclusion model that places students with special needs in the general classroom. It is a model that increases students' awareness of children who are different and teaches them compassion towards others.
My students attend an urban school, where 90% of the students are English language learners with Spanish or Portuguese being their first language.
The students come to school everyday excited to learn and explore new ideas. Students work cooperatively to maximize concept development and peer relationships. In our classroom, we are respectful of each others' opinions, at the same time as challenging them with our own thoughts.
My Project
I am asking for a class set of Wonder, printer toner, and flexible seating including four balance balls and stools. These materials will make a difference in my students' learning. It will be a great way to build a community in my classroom during the first few weeks of school. The comfy, alternative seating options will allow my students to feel comfortable and excited about reading. The books will enable us to create a literature circle where students learn about reading and communicating. The ink will allow me to print out materials for students that will enhance their understanding of the novel. I will also be able to create a bulletin board that allows students to show all they have learned and try some random acts of kindness.
Wonder is a #1 New York Times Best Selling Book and it is the inspiration for the Choose Kind movement.
As students read this book, they will learn about a boy with a facial deformity who is entering a typical fifth grade classroom for the first time. Students will read from his perspective and then the perspective of some of the other characters. Through all these perspectives, my students will learn more about acceptance and compassion.
