Hello! My name is Kimberly Sunshine and I teach Special Education in Menifee, CA. The students I serve are in grades 6-8 with moderate-severe disabilities. They are exceptional and extraordinary in the best of ways. My students have a variety of needs stemming from Down Syndrome, Autism, Physical Impairment and/or other physical or intellectual needs. They always put a smile on my face and on the faces of everyone they meet. I am lucky have an incredible team of paraeducators, specialists, colleagues and administrators that are always there to support.
My goal is to add more life skills and job skills to our program such as preparing and serving coffee, working a cash register, picking up and delivering projects from other classes on campus and office skills such as shredding and copying paper.
This is important because it gives students opportunities to build on their skills to prepare them their adult lives. It also ensures inclusion when these students are out on campus getting to know their general education peers and the teachers they meet.
Our site and district have generously provided some of the items needed to accomplish this and now we need help from our community to provide our next important tool- a copy machine. This copy machine will be outfitted with adaptive switches to make it easy to use for our students with physical impairments. Students will build job skills by offering to take on copy projects from teachers on campus- helping them become independent in picking up, completing and dropping off the finished projects. Because we will be using adaptive technology to enhance this experience, we are asking for support in providing our own copy machine for the classroom. Thank you for considering my exceptional students.
