Making Informational Text Exciting

My students need 30 copies of Extreme Weather as informational text to integrate their reading skills while learning the science curriculum.

My Students

My students come from a variety of backgrounds, socio-economnic statuses, and academic abilities. We are a Title 1 school in a suburban/rural small town.

"We are loyal leaders who are supportive of each other and their goals, we are examples of good friends and leaders." Those are the words my students use to describe themselves every morning.

Our class mission statement, written by my students, is the best way that I can describe my students. They truly live by those words. They continuously impress me with their desire for learning and their thoughtfulness of the other students around them.

My Project

I only have six hours a day to teach my fourth graders an array of information. I would like to make the most of this time by integrating reading instruction with science content. The book, Extreme Weather, will allow me to reach that goal.

We do not have a science textbook and these books will help fulfill that need.

Students need to learn how to read informational text, which includes using text features such as photographs, charts, captions, and headings. The best way to teach these text features is to practice using them in real world text. My goal is to provide real world text that covers my science curriculum so that my students are engaged in the process of learning, while at the same time successfully teaching my entire core curriculum.
