I only have six hours a day to teach my fourth graders an array of information. I would like to make the most of this time by integrating reading instruction with science content. The book, Extreme Weather, will allow me to reach that goal. We do not have a science textbook and these books will help fulfill that need. Students need to learn how to read informational text, which includes using text features such as photographs, charts, captions, and headings. The best way to teach these text features is to practice using them in real world text. My goal is to provide real world text that covers my science curriculum so that my students are engaged in the process of learning, while at the same time successfully teaching my entire core curriculum.
