I am fortunate to be part of a school that strives for excellence. We meet students' needs in rigorous teaching strategies and expect only the best from our students.
My school is proud to be a "Leader in Me" school that works on taking author Steven Covey's 7 Habits, making them age-appropriate and working them into our school campus, so that students begin to see their campus as a way to show leadership.
The "Leader in Me" is not a curriculum, but rather a way of doing life on the school campus through awareness of how we learn and grow, and how we speak and treat one another.
Students learning the habit of solving conflicts, then becoming conflict managers, is just one way the Leader in Me program in action on our campus looks like. Students take the 7 habits that are taught to them and begin to think of ways they can take ownership of their campus through leadership. Whether it's a 5th grader helping a 1st grader to read, students setting goals and overcoming academic obstacles, or students seeing a need to clean their campus, all are ways that the 7 habits teach students to lead.
My Project
My students came up with the best idea ever, making homemade ice cream to enjoy while watching our novel James and the Giant Peach. We have been reading this novel for the last couple of months and it is time to enjoy the movie to compare to the novel. My students thought of the idea of making homemade ice cream while watching. I found this Ice cream ball maker that allows students to learn how to make homemade ice cream while tossing a ball and exercising with it. I am requesting enough for groups to use the balls at the same time. I am also requesting the flavoring and rock salt that is needed to put into the ball to make the ice cream. We are going to have so much fun tossing these balls and watching how ice cream is made, and then enjoying eating it will watching our novel study.
