My Students

Do you remember memorizing dates and names for history tests? U.S. history shouldn't be rote memorization of a collection of facts. Help make the American Revolution and American West come alive for my students!

My 5th graders are eager to read non-fiction and learn about U.S.

history, but they need engaging materials and texts. Numerous texts are available about the American Revolution and westward expansion, but many texts only include the bare facts. Few texts tell the real-life stories of these events, and these stories are the ones that are most engaging.

My Project

The books "Which Way to the Wild West?" and "King George: What Was His Problem?" are perfect texts to illustrate history as "his" "story." History shouldn't be simply a collection of arbitrary facts--it should be the study of connections among people, places, and events. As part of author Steve Sheinkin's series Everything Your Schoolbooks Didn't Tell You, these books share real-life stories about the American Revolution and Westward Expansion. As a textbook contributor, Steve Sheinkin saved all the interesting stories he found during his research. When textbook publishers wouldn't print them, he decided to write his own series. The result? Fascinating true stories, facts, people, and events written in a humorous, student-friendly tone. I am requesting multiple copies of these books for book club selections, which will integrate reading and social studies instruction. My 5th graders will enjoy discussing these outstanding texts and learning about history together.

Please help me make history come alive for my 5th graders!

I have not found a more engaging and informative U.S. history non-fiction series. These books will motivate students to learn more about history, and, like me, they won't be able to put the books down!
