My Project
My students are excited every year for this unit in History. They enjoy reading, especially about famous people in American history. I want to instill a love for reading and literacy in all my students. By providing students with a variety of biographies like picture books and short chapter books that are well written and culturally representative. I want the students in my classroom to relate to the famous American they have chosen to embody and represent for the Living Wax Museum 5th grade hosts each year.
Books and biographies that are culturally representative are essential to a student's success.
They provide rich, diverse literacy that students can connect and relate to. The level of engagement that students show when they feel represented and heard is incredible. Representation in literature and in the classroom is important. Seeing these amazing main characters in the biographies gives students a chance to see themselves in these positions and leadership roles. They might find that they are similar to some of these historical figures and that they have shared experiences.
Students will be more motivated to engage with literature and develop a love for reading that will last them a lifetime. This project based assignment gives students an opportunity to choose someone they would like to read about. Then they will research, write, make a presentation and dress as the person they have chosen for the Living Wax Museum. This becomes a community event in our school and students look forward to it every year.
