Help me give my students modern dystopian novels. They read the classics in other grades, but 11th grade has a lack of fun, contemporary YA dystopian novels that cover important themes in a modern, relevant, and accessible way.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Modern YA dystopian novels will introduce students to the themes of a dystopian in a way they can access, understand, and enjoy. Students are required to read classic dystopian novels in all other grades, but 11th grade has a gap in this genre. By introducing contemporary fiction, students will learn that stories can be interesting and relevant to their lives in a less intimidating voice.
The formation of book clubs within the classroom will foster reader choice and enjoyment, communication skills, and creativity.
Each set is the first of a trilogy, in hopes that students will get hooked and want to finish the story and create their own book clubs to finish the series!
The modern selections fit with the 11th grade curriculum as contemporary American literature by an award winning YA author who frequently gives author talks about the writing process. Students will be able to experience interviews given by the author to analyze his style and writing choices and use that experience to shape their own writing.
