My Project
My 7th-grade students are extremely curious, visual learners that connect deeply with stories that reflect their community. Many of my students are reluctant readers or multilingual learners who thrive when reading is supported by visuals and cultural relevance. Many also love reading manga, which is similar to graphic novels. A graphic novel would increase my students' engagement.
Graphic novels like "Hāmākua Hero: A True Plantation Story" help make history accessible and exciting for students.
This graphic novels tells the true story of Katsu Goto, a Japanese immigrant who stood up for workers' rights on Hawai‘i Island. It’s a powerful, local story that will help my students see history through a different lens.
Students in my class typically find textbooks intimidating, but they’re more willing to pick up graphic novels. The pictures and dialogue make reading feel achievable and fun. Graphic novels like "Hāmākua Hero: A True Plantation Story" also help students build vocabulary, reading comprehension skills, confidence, media literacy, and overall strengthens critical thinking skills.
By donating to this project, you’ll be putting meaningful, visual stories into the hands of diverse learners—stories that reflect Hawai‘i, inspire empathy, and help students grow as thoughtful, and engaged readers.
