My students need the Makerbot Academy to learn skills which are in use in industry today! When we build things we remember them much better!

My Students
We as teachers can certainly talk, talk, talk. This gets pretty boring for students. With the Makerbot a student may hold it it their hands after drawing it on the screen. Students will never forget what they make with Makerbot. Our school needs more of these real applications.
Our students are from a small town.
Many live in the country in beautiful northeast Iowa. Our school is a cultural center in the town. Our school is a high-achieving school, with very good test scores and student precipitation in extra curricular activities. We offer many different areas of study, but most departments are lightly staffed. My students are not exposed to a lot of modern technical applications. This gift will allow us to further utilize the skills acquired in AutoCad class.
My Project
My students take a class called Introduction to AutoCad. In this class we mainly utilize 2D CAD drawings. I envision using the Makerbot Academy in conjunction with AutoCad. The students will be required to draw parts and prototypes and print them out quite easily using the Makerbot. Because we build real things in our shop program, I would expect to use the Makerbot mostly as a rapid prototype maker.
We can all think back on our schooling, and we remember very few specific days or events.
We often remember the hand-on projects and demonstrations that we were asked to do. As a teacher, I am asked to provide real-world technology and experiences, and with the Makerbot I will be able to do this. My students will literally do unforgettable work with the Makerbot.
