This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a Title I, an inner-city elementary school in California. We serve a low-income community with 99% of our student body receiving free or reduced-price lunches. The majority of our students are second language learners who work hard every single day.
Despite these challenges, our students continue to make significant growth in math and language arts, at a rate higher than Oakland and the state of California.
This award speaks to the hard work and dedication of the staff, students, and families at our school.
My Project
Dr. Suess said it best, "You have brains in your head, You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose!" Educators aim to teach students to make good choices that will affect their lives in a positive way. That job is made easier when we can reward those choices with treats that kids actually want. After polling our middle school students, we learned that the incentives they're interested in are items such as reusable water bottles, pencils, candy, and toys to adorn their school supplies.
