Our school is a Title I school with over 80 percent of our students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. Our students walk to and from school, many from single parent/grandparent homes. Many have not had the opportunity to explore the world outside their zip code.
Our staff is committed to doing everything we can to help our students on their path to college and career readiness, supporting them academically, socially and emotionally.
Every year our students participate in a year-long service learning project. These have included raising money to support scholarships for high school girls in Tanzania, sending flip flops and sunglasses to children in South America, and purchasing filled duffel bags for children going into foster care in our own community, to name a few. Their hearts are big but so are their needs!
I would like to attend the International Association of School Librarianship Conference in Dubrovnik, Croatia in October. I have been a member of this organization for two years and have made connections for myself and my students with classrooms all over the world.
Giving my students a global perspective and opportunities to learn with students around the world helps them develop empathy and understand other perspectives.
I have submitted a proposal to present at this conference on how I have implemented global activities in my school’s Library and Innovation Lab. I would love to attend this conference to share my knowledge and to learn from others!
