My students need yoga mats, blocks and belts to utilize during their yoga class. These items help with positioning so that all students can participate in the class.
Imagine a class where you can stretch, build muscle, improve coordination and even relax. This is what our weekly yoga class entails as part of our students' occupational therapy sessions.
Our school is an intermediate school with students in 6th-8th grade.
The children that receive occupational therapy have multiple disabilities or different abilities, as I like to look at it. These children have low muscle tone, decreased strength and coordination and difficulty with motor planning. Some students have difficulty with sensory regulation and others have behavioral issues.
My Project
We currently have some yoga mats but they are worn and are beginning to tear. The yoga props including the blocks and belts are used to help children to achieve correct positioning. This will also allow them to expand their yoga practice to include poses that would otherwise be too challenging without the use of props.
Our students participate in yoga sequences to help increase strength, flexibility, coordination and self esteem.
Some students have physical limitations that restrict their movements. Yoga blocks and belts help to allow modifications to the poses so that all students can be successful. The students finish the yoga class with relaxation. The students have progressed since September and I can't wait to see where they will be in June!
