My students are all labeled as severe intellectually challenged. They are all nonverbal and have some type of visual impairment. I am one of two homebound teachers, that means I travel to student homes that are either too medically fragile to attend school or they have behaviors that are best managed in a home environment. My 6 students range from 3 to 18 years of age and have varying degrees of mobility. The families I service are all fantastic and love their child. It is a blessing to be allowed into their homes to teach their child. The homebase school is fabulous. My own child was a student at this school and I admired it to the point that I became a teacher here.
My Project
My students are medically fragile and are dependent on adults for every need. They require nursing services and have an adult with them to feed, change, bath, change the tv station. etc. My students can not communicate verbally or physically wants and needs. I want to change that. My students should be given the opportunity to show their opinions. Since they do not have the ability to grip, pal pads switches I am requesting will allow these students to activate switch toys with just the slightest movement of their finger, hand, or even head!
I have asked for a variety of switch toys because just like the rest of us, we get tired of playing with the same toy over and over again.
I am trying to create a switch toy "library" so that I can rotate them in and out of the homes. This is an exciting idea for me!
These students will be able to independently activate the switch and decide on their own if they want the toy to play again. This will enable a child who is dependent on most aspects of his life to have a small amount of independence in making choices.
