My Students

Remember playing PacMan or Sims on a computer or video game? How about playing tennis on a PlayStation? Students are still into computers and play but now want more interaction and creativity. 3D printers are not just about printing out a key chain or toy. They are about designing and creating.

My students are at one of the oldest schools in our district.

While other schools have iPads, Gateway to Technology programs and 3D printers, our students have none of those resources available to them. We are neither wealthy enough as a school to afford them nor are we a Title I school that receives federal funding for our students. The students are wonderful kids who (like most middle-schoolers) are into everything. They are energetic and fun and love to do anything with their hands. They come in with duct tape bracelets and talk about using their phones to make videos. But they receive almost no tech training at school other than how to use a website or build a presentation.

My Project

I have a Makerspace area that incorporate origami, art, puzzles, knitting and other low tech activities. Students love that area and will work as a group to teach each other how to knit or draw a cartoon. They are enthusiastic about trying something new and learning a skill, both of which are great attributes for a student. With a 3D printer, that enthusiasm and creativity can build to a new level. Imagine a student envisioning an object, graphing it out on the computer then actually making the item. They will gain skills in visual acuity, visualization of something in 360 degrees, planning the steps needed to bring an idea to fruition, cooperation with others. All of these skills build confidence in a student as they can see a project to completion. And while a 3D printer is expensive initially, the materials are relatively inexpensive. Students have the option to fail and try again as they improve on a project and idea. My students need a 3D printer and the filament for the printer.

This project will add fun and creativity to the students' learning as they have the opportunity to actively design, create and build items for themselves.

Obtaining this equipment will put our students on a more level playing field with students in the surrounding schools who already have access to this type of learning. Students need more out of school than rote memorization or only writing papers. They need to experience the impact of their own thoughts and creativity.
