My students need science kits, petri dishes, games about food safety/sanitation, and a food safety DVD to enhance and supplement the unit with hands-on activities.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Today's learners are different because they need hands-on experiences. Classrooms have changed from lectures to demonstrations where students take part. Teaching food safety and sanitation needs to be a lab experience for my students, and the items requested will help achieve this for them.
My students are 10th- through 12-graders at an inner-city high school on the East Coast.
They are learning the foundations of nutrition, physical activity, wellness, food science, and food safety in my courses. Many of the students at my school receive free or reduced lunch.
The boiling point is 212 degrees. Freezing is 32 degrees. The Danger Zone- the range of temperatures where bacteria grow quickest- is between 40 and 140 degrees. That could a lot to remember for some students, but it is made so much easier with hands-on learning. Showing students how bacteria grow in the Danger Zone by playing games with them and using petri dishes and food left in the refrigerator, food left on the counter, and food left in a car overnight will leave more of an impact on the students and severely impact their learning process. The requested science kits and petri dishes will help students see bacteria grow at different stages, and this will help them learn and identify various food-borne illnesses. The games and video I have requested will further solidify students' understanding of the food safety concepts. The Glow Germ Mini Kit will show students how important it is for them to wash their hands, as this practice is a major step in preventing illnesses.
By playing these food safety games and working together as teams on these science labs, they not only receive academic learning, but they receive a lesson of teamwork, cooperation, critical thinking, and other life skills these students need but may not receive anywhere else but at school.
