Making Fluency Fun

My Project

This year I have been blessed a group of first graders who have a true desire to gain independence and unlock the written word. It is their thirst for this independence that has made me want to give them all I can to make this a super enjoyable and successful year in their careers as students.

In funding this project you will help me create an environment where my students will enjoy each component of the reading and writing workshop.

"Hear myself read phones" are a wonderful device that allow the children to whisper read and hear themselves without background noises. They channel all of the sound waves from the child's whisper to their ear, allowing the student to clearly hear what otherwise may have been one low sound in a busy classroom. This helps to eliminate distractions and direct the child's attention.

In the reading classroom, this helps the children to focus on every sound made. These devices make words sound more clear, help children focus on individual phonemes and blending sounds fluently while also building oral reading skills.

In the writing classroom, children can whisper read drafts produced in writers workshop to help them focus on fluency and find missing words or redundancies similar to a peer editing session. They learn to focus on the actual written piece and build their ability to edit their own work independently.
