My Students

My students in the rural town of Pleasant View, TN enjoy connecting pieces of history to their modern lives and seeing how their current education will impact their future careers. While many of them come from suburban backgrounds, many others come from places of struggle and hardship.

No matter their heritage, all students deserve equal footing, opportunity, and champions in their lives.

A library of new, modern, and representative books will be a major boost in all of these areas.

My Project

All books are not created equal. While our school library has a lot to offer, it is difficult to pull reluctant reader's eyes away from their phones towards books that are decades old.

Students need access to books that speak to their specific moment in history, and to their unique backgrounds.

Having an in-class library full of teenage characters growing up in the global world like their own will help students feel seen and understood.

Also, having multiple copies of some key titles allows for friends to read together and discuss. Group discussions give students the opportunity to unpack heavy topics in the books, apply literacy skills, and develop critical thinking about personal, social, and political ideas.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
