Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students at CLMS are amazing. They are from diverse backgrounds and come to school so full of life that their contributions to the school climate are beyond measure. Because of our close proximity to the Dam Neck Naval Base, we have an overwhelming number of students who are military-connected and brought to the vibrant city of Virginia Beach through parental and guardian assignments.
Middle School is a time of rapid growth and challenging transition, making it extremely important to have appealing and engaging lessons for learning.
We have a comprehensive and in-depth curriculum in all disciplines and a Guidance Department that prides itself on creating a program that will grow with each student throughout their three years with us. We not only want to teach students concepts, we want them to feel their importance and carry them with them as they move to High School and beyond.
In addition to promoting fun standardized learning, this project is geared towards blending School Counseling and English and reaching all students. What better way can you learn interpersonal skills than through communication and evaluation of text and voice?
My Project
These materials will be used to create centers in English and Guidance lessons so that we can create a fun and engaging association between students and literacy. They will be shared between teachers and counselors to find meaningful ways for students to read and write expressively, thus incorporating interpersonal growth as well. These games will be perfect for classroom and group lessons in the conventional classroom as well as standardized testing workshops. With the pressures of standardized testing, students need fun and playful outlets to feel a larger role in their learning. This is a great way to educate students and dissipate stress and pressure when approaching the concepts.
We visualize students wanting to play these games together, without realizing that they are also learning.
For example, instead of working on flat essays and grammar worksheets, students will be inspired by creating thorough narratives with the Story Cubes and the Storymatic Cards. For reading comprehension, students can use Fact or Fiction or the story comprehension balls/dice to play back what they heard, instead of mock tests and answering questions online. The wooden tumbling blocks will also be decoupage to create another comprehension game for students to enjoy after reading. All of these can be altered to perfectly fit Guidance Lessons, by using content in the reading or themes with the writing to blend the two disciplines seamlessly. By having several copies of each game, we can also put students in groups and create an exciting and competitive element.
If you know middle schoolers, you know that it takes a specific formula for them to enjoy what they are doing. Having fun and competitive resources for group and classroom will allow us to enter game-based curriculum for our 21st-century learners. Students can excel in English as well as interpersonal skills.
