Making ELA Accessible Through Books, Art, and Fidget Toys
My students need creative ways of learning. Since there is no art program currently at my school, I want to incorporate small art projects into my class by using watercolor crayons, crayons, and scratch pads.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
As a new teacher, I have yet to meet my students. However, I have walked on campus and seen the community that exists between students, teachers, and faculty. Our students are energetic, outgoing and eager to learn.
They deserve an amazing education as well as the resources needed in order to succeed.
Their success should not be determined by their circumstances or living situation. Rather, the students deserve the opportunity and necessary tools to be the best that they can be and reach their full potential. I am confident that this journey is rooted in education.
My school is based in Los Angeles in an under-resourced community. Over 90% of our students are eligible for free or discounted lunch. My students need books that interest them, fidget toys to help them concentrate, and fun ways to learn so that they stay engaged with the material. My goal is to differentiate the material to make the content accessible to all my students to ensure their academic success.
My Project
As a new teacher, my classroom is empty and I cannot provide my students all the materials they need to thrive. My students need a fun, accessible way to learn so that they stay motivated and engaged with the material.
Providing my students with alternative approaches to learning through art, fidget toys, and other accessible learning methods will help them better understand and be more receptive to the English content that they will be learning.
They need basic school supplies like pencils, erasers, notebooks, highlighters, etc. to apply their knowledge and help them succeed in the classroom. They also need a creative outlet when learning so that they can express themselves artistically and in other ways. Oftentimes, these students lack elective courses in their schedules, which is why the inclusion of art in this class is so important and crucial to their creative exploration. This approach will help create a more inclusive learning environment by making the material more engaging and accessible, whether it be through art, a vocabulary wall, or a quick white board recall game.
