My students need 29 cross-curricular resources, including construction paper, cover paper, a digital camera, Dot Art Painters, books for making art from nature, gears and gizmos, a sound box set, a magnetic maze for science, reading books about Recycling, and writing aids.
I teach highly energetic students with Autism in grades K-5 in a high-need community in Oklahoma. On the Autism Spectrum, my students present with varying skills and abilities ranging from nonverbal to verbal, limited fine motor skills, sensory integration issues, and social skills concerns, to name a few.
Connections! This is our 2009-2010 school-wide theme and my students are ready to learn all about connections. What are connections and how do we make them? In the world of Autism, it is vital to learn about connections. Our students are often unaware of the people, things, and happenings surrounding them in their environment. This school year, we want to focus on teaching our students the concepts of making connections with others, to recognize the importance of the objects we come in contact with everyday, and become more aware of and involved in the different activities in their environment. In order to help the students open their eyes and literally see, take in, and begin to understand their surroundings, we need supplies to help us create lessons and activities to teach the different concepts of connections.
When this project is funded, my students will be able to better understand how they connect with others, why certain objects are needed for specific activities, and how they connect with the environment. Using the different Dot Art paints, we will create a life size model of “Connect-the-Dots”, illustrating how each individual student is connected to almost anything and everything surrounding them. The additional supplies will help further their awareness in the areas of environmental sounds, jobs and activities within our community, transportation, and Earth and recycling. The camera is needed for creating a photo-story book with each student.
By funding this project, you will bring the much needed supplies to our classroom community and allow our students with Autism the opportunity to learn about all the different types of connections, develop a life-size model of ways we make connections, and to create a one of a kind photo-story book for each student. Thank you for helping us connect to each other, our school, our community, and our environment.
