Making Connections About Weather at Home Through Weekend Weather Kits

My students need thermometers, hygrometers, and barometers to create weather stations that they can take home to extend their learning past the classroom making connections between classroom learning and their homes.

My Students

My goal as an educator is to create an environment that promotes exploration and success.

My class is a goal-driven classroom that implements multiple experiences so all kinds of learners and intelligences have a chance to shine.

My school is located in a rural, high-poverty area. The students are diverse mentally and physically. We are a positive behavior support school and strive to give our students the best supports available making our atmosphere is warm and welcoming.

My Project

Missouri learning standards require that students in third grade represent data in tables and graphical displays to describe typical weather conditions expected during a particular season. I will use these supplies to create take-home weather kits for weekend weather observations that can be shared with families and create a database of findings in tables and graphical displays. In addition to the kits, students will keep a weather log to record readings from their instruments and to calculate the mean, median, and mode of their findings. During the week students will make predictions based off observations and use data from the kits to evaluate the validity of their predictions.

The materials requested for this project will improve my students' critical thinking skills, comprehension of weather, and independence as they continue to practice moving their way through the scientific inquiry process.

It will reinforce what is learned in the classroom, involve families with their experiences, and give them independence as they guide their own direction of investigations at home.
