This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work with students from Kindergarten to Post High with a variety of language, speech sound and pragmatic disorders. Being able to effectively communicate is crucial not only to succeed in school and life, but to develop relationships and having a meaningful and fulfilling life. Each day my students are working on becoming better communicators by learning sign or how to use an alternative augmentative communication device, how to say speech sounds correctly, learning how to use correct grammar, and enriching their language.

My Project

This iPad will help give some of my non-verbal students a voice through the use of apps. It will also enable me to be more efficient when working on sounds with my students who have speech sound disorders. In the past I have pulled students out of class for 30 minute groups to work on their articulation skills. With the iPad, I will be able to go to their classroom, pull them out for only 5-10 minutes so less class time will be missed, and work on their speech sounds out in the hall. Since children are also often highly motivated by technology, it will enable me to spend more time working on things that directly impact my students' performance rather than trying to find ways to keep them motivated.
