My Students

At my school we believe in educating the whole student. We believe Character and Academics are integral to a child’s development. When I think of where I want my students to be at the end of the year I hold their Academic achievements and their Character achievements to the same bar.

At KIPP Leadership Primary 90 percent of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch and come from low income families.

Our children are inquisitive and hardworking, they are hungry for knowledge and experiences. They understand that getting to and through college is hard work worth doing.

My Project

At my school we believe in educating the whole child in both character and academics. We base our character program on the research summarized Character, Strengths and Virtues.

The research shows that the students who have the 24 key character strengths are more likely to succeed then students who may have other advantages but not the 24 strengths.

We explicitly teach these strengths throughout the year. A key component of the character program is the weekly celebration where they participate in an activity aligned to the character focus for the week. For example, they will use Ritz crackers and M&M's to create faces, this activity is aligned to the self-control character strength.

During the week leading up to the celebration students learn how to regulate their own emotions by first identifying them. Celebration is a key time for student reflection on individual and group character achievement.
