Making Books To Tell Our Stories

My students need ink cartridges for our class printer since our school budget does not provide for this neccessity needed in order to print their writing projects.

My Students

We use a Writing Workshop approach to teaching writing in my school. Students are fortunate to utilize class computers since many can not afford computers at home to type their final drafts for publication. It's difficult to print the work since the ink for the printer's expensive and not in budget.

My students attend an urban school and many face adversity daily dealing with crime and poverty that plague the nation's cities.

My students deal with such issues with grace and perseverance. My school was considered as low performing, and has been labeled a "turnaround school" under state and federal reform. With school change in mind, my students work hard to improve their literacy skills by becoming more proficient writers. They deserve to see their work in print.

My Project

Having ink cartridges will allow us to actually print the many stories that my students have saved on various computers. We are aiming to create a class anthology with real photos as illustrations. This project will be the final piece in a unit of personal narrative writing. I believe that seeing their work printed and bound will provide the students with a sense of pride and craftsmanship. It will prove to them that their voices matter...that they matter.

In addition to being able to print their stories, having ink cartridges and the ability to print will allow my students to readily share their work in other academic areas.

Often they are able to create documents, graphs, charts on the computer but can not print a hardcopy. The ability to print materials will be so valuable. The ink will have a positive impact on the overall quality of the class giving students the opportunity to have tangible evidence of their hard work and thinking.
