Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are gifted first, second, third and fourth graders in a low socioeconomic area of North Texas. Our gifted program serves five elementary schools. These students come from varied backgrounds and cultures. They are talented, imaginative, and creative children. They all have one thing in common; they love to learn.
Some are talented young artists while others are future novelists.
One of them may someday lead our country. All of them will definitely need 21st-century skills when they leave public schooling and enter into the real world.
My Project
My students love to build, and we have an extra classroom next to ours that we are allowed to use for storage and workspace. We would like to turn that room into a Maker Space for our classroom, and that can be shared with others on the campus who want to use it. We are creating projects for materials for this Maker Space.
We are asking for a life-size catapult that we can use to learn about engineering, simple machines, and Middle Ages warfare.
Along with the other life-sized simple machines from STEM Supplies, we want to create a space where students can come and learn about simple machines, and the role they play in our daily lives. In addition, we are asking for four sets of Octo-clips to assist in the building of our own miniature versions of the catapult using materials in the classroom, such as cardboard. These little clips will offer more stability to our projects than using tape or trying to glue them together and are safer than using hot glue (the only other thing that seems to hold!).
Thank you for considering our project and for your support of public education.
