My Project
This is my first year as a speech language pathologist at this school. As a Chicago native, I understand how this neighborhood has been affected by racial inequality, low income as well as trauma and grief. Most of my students not only have speech/language needs but also behavioral, social-emotional, and sensory needs. Due to the low income nature of my students, I am the only speech therapy they will likely receive in their lives. Additionally, the students have been without service since last year due to a shortage of SLPs. I have been given a small closet with no air ventilation in the basement as the speech "room". It is not sensory friendly at all and very unwelcoming. My first step transforming this place into a more sensory friendly space and more welcoming place so my students can put all their energy and focus into therapy.
