Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach on the wrong side of town to students that shouldn’t do as well as they do. But they rise to the occasion. We consistently outperform students from the same backgrounds as well as some of the “better” schools in our district. But that is all just about test scores.

Our school is held together by love.

They know when they walk in that they are cared for. I can take a new student with behavior issues aside and let them know they can relax here. They can still be a kid just learn and explore. They don’t have to be tough and street smart. We give them a safe space to learn.

I want my students to have the best education they can possibly receive to go out into the world and make a difference. That they can succeed.

My Project

The fine arts have proven time and time again to be the backbone of a well-rounded education. The arts teach profound problem-solving skills and higher-order thinking skills that our students require. Even our youngest students begin their education with these opportunities.

Through art, we blend the past with the future, to expand our students’ perspectives beyond their neighborhoods.

I want my students to have experiences and exploration with new and exciting tools. Printmaking is an area I would like to give them more variety to experiment with, and the requested supplies can be used by almost every one of my 550 students.

I plan to expand my students' knowledge and experience with printmaking. We have discussed the history and importance of the art form as a precursor to modern photography. In the past, students have created prints from foam plates. Since we have recently developed into an environmental science academy, I would like to introduce them to more eco-friendly materials. Both the Gelli Arts printing plates and silkscreens are reusable printmaking tools that will also be new and exciting experiences for my students.
