Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are 10-12th graders that are taking Criminology--an academic elective. They are interested in criminal justice, criminology and crime scene investigation.

Although bright and inquisitive these students need the necessary resources and materials to make the content meaningful, engaging and accessible.

Our high school provides many things for my students, including 1:1 technology, however, even the best technology can't substitute for basic critical thinking and analytical skills paired with good study habits and engaging curriculum that I know this project will help aid.

My Project

Students in my Criminology class have an entire unit dedicated to criminal justice. During this unit the capstone project follows a crime from its inception, crime scene investigation, through a mock trial, and finally sentencing or acquittal.

I have always struggled to afford the materials to make the crime scene realistic and engaging.

This year, through DonorsChoose, I hope to create an amazing mock crime scene to couple with their mock trial so that they get an engaging lesson and an experience they will not forget.

I will use all the materials to create an amazing mock crime scene. Specifically the "Forensic Science Kit: The Missy Hammond Case" will be the backbone to this crime scene. Using the case as a guide I will set up the faux crime scene in my classroom. I have ordered 8 kits so that every student has the opportunity to participate.

The Latent fingerprinting kit and Lees Ink-less Fingerprint will allow my students to practice matching and lifting their own fingerprints before attempting to solve the Missy Hammond Case. The Complete Crime Scene Kit and Evidence bags will allow my students to collect evidence in the most accurate way possible in their mock crime scene. And finally the gavel is the last prop we needed for our mock trial.

I look forward to being able to provide my students with the ability to dust for prints, test cloth for trace evidence, and investigate a murder with sound physical evidence. The resulting mock trial will be quite heated as students will have a vested interest in the evidence.
