Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 8th graders in a public middle school. These students are typical youth, finding their way in the world, while at the same time, striving for academic success. While balancing social lives and lives outside of school, these students come to school everyday to work hard to be the best students they can be.
These students are the future.
However, they need some help to ensure they all work to their potential and stay on track. I want my students to remain inspired, to see the big picture, and to work to make their dreams come true. These are exceptional young people that I teach, and I truly believe that they all have the potential to do great things.
Our school serves students in grades 6-8 and provides rigorous academics, fantastic teachers, and a safe learning environment. As a result, we are very proud of all of our students' outstanding achievements. My personal goal, as an English and History teacher, aligns with our school goal of preparing our students for success in high school, college, and beyond.
My Project
My mission is, and has always been, to get students to fall in love with reading. In my class students read in a variety of ways: independently, in small groups, with a partner, and together, as a class. For the most, my students are blessed with a lot of choice in what they read. However, when it comes to reading a novel as a class, a CORE novel, there are very few options that are still engaging, relevant, interesting, and moving enough to really REACH my students.
I'm trying to give my students an core novel that will be one they remember, but I only have access to the same books that have been read year after year!
Don't get me wrong, there are books that are timeless, but for the most part, my 8th graders do't get excited when they know they are going to read the same exact book their brother or sister suffered through a few years before.
Wolf by Wolf is an alternate history fiction novel. Ryan Graudin invites her readers into the world of Yael, whose mission in life is to kill Adolf Hitler. In this fast-paced novel, readers accompany Yael on the motorcycle race of a lifetime. It is the story of humanity, of identity, and of passion. It is a beautifully written novel, and one that my students will not only enjoy, but remember.
Please help me build a library of newer, more updated library of core novels for my class to read together throughout their 8th grade year. Wolf By Wolf would be a great start!
