This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students at my school are kids who have struggled to complete High School. Many come from low income neighborhoods, and struggle through the heavy weight issues of poverty that no young person should ever have to deal with. Other have a history of disrupted education, so that they have been moved around quite a lot in their school history, and now find themselves making up for lost time. There are cases where students spend extended time out of school due to health issues, and other cases where a student's attendance to school suffered due to bullying, need to work, or poor decisions, with no adult looking out for them.
At our school we try to help catch those kids who have managed to slip through the cracks, and help them get back on track to graduate, set future goals, and gain skills for independence.
My Project
The process of making a mold and cast of one's own hand, and face, is a personal, and high interest art project that sets kids up to succeed. The look of pride on a student's face as they open their mold to reveal a life like cast of their hand is priceless. It's a look that every child's face should know, and that's what this project gives them.
Students will personalize their hand casts.
Some will keep them, and others will give them as gifts to a parent, or someone else special. They will know the joy of giving something they made.
After students have made hand casts, they will work together to make facial casts. This supports team work, and problem solving, as they take their previous success to the next level.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
