This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I recently attended a computer science educator workshop that empowered me to teach computer science concepts, such block coding, to middle school (7-8) students at Mueller Charter School. The workshop specifically taught me how to use and implement the physical computing device called MakeyMakey. MakeyMakeys allow students to generate input into their computer program through innovative and imaginative ways.

Physical computing components such as MakeyMakeys have been shown to increase student motivation with coding, specifically in young girls who are underrepresented in computer science (The Big Book of Computing Pedagogy, P133).

This request for MakeyMakeys will permit one class of students, working in pairs or small groups, to use these devices at the same time.

Mueller Charter School does not currently offer any computer science or coding opportunities to its middle school students. This project request is a step towards a change that will make computer science a crucial component of the middle school curriculum.
