My Students
My students are so excited to return to school and get back to having hands-on STEAM experiences in our Innovation Lab. We will delve into 3D printing, robotics, and programming, as well as many other hands-on projects. It is so fun to watch their faces light up when they see the results of their own creations.
The students are curious and creative, imaginative, and innovative.
I love hearing their new ideas. We are a diverse school with many cultures and languages, and STEAM experiences are great at bringing everyone together for a common goal.
My Project
I love to get my students interested in STEM as a future career. Being a woman engineer myself, it is extremely important for me to be able to be able to highlight the accomplishments of female innovators, and connect with the students at a young age to let them know that their ideas matter. Using the IF/THEN Collection videos, we will learn about Debbie Sterling and Karina Popovich. Both these amazing women engineers were able to transform a passion into a career. As girls, they realized that the world didn't have the toys or the clothes that they wanted, and as women they made it happen.
I will use the profiles of Sterling and Popovich to show the students that STEM isn't just about the big ideas, but it's the little ideas that you have now that have the potential to become big.
We will then explore more great innovators using the "Little People, Big Dreams" book series, which highlight diverse great minds such as Stephen Hawkins (astrophysics), Zaha Hadid (architecture) and Marie Curie (chemistry) and tell their stories as they grew up, in ways that students can identify with now.
The students will learn how to make circuits using kits made from the paper clips, binder clips, brads, tea lights, and instructions from SnappyCircuits.com. These kits can also be created as take-home kits if needed for distance learning. The students will be encouraged to design and create "wearable" circuits, taking inspiration from the Popovich Alpha line of clothing. Students will then use the Makey Makey Classic Kits to first explore the online curriculum projects provided by Makey Makey, and then will take inspiration from Sterling's Goldieblox toys to work to design a new toy or video game, using the Makey Makey and Scratch online coding.
