My students need storage containers for money, bear counters, ink pads with coin stamps, and playing cards to help improve their financial literacy skills.
My students are excited to come to school each day and to learn from one another. They enjoy working in collaborative groups and sharing their knowledge with each other. They enjoy using their critical thinking skills to evaluate new information while integrating the arts to show their learning. They get very excited any time we can use technology in the classroom and they aren't afraid to try something new.
Jane Goodall once said, "You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you.
What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make." With this quote in mind, I want to help my students become aware of the impact they are having on the world around them.
My Project
In second grade money is a big unit. For many it is the first time they are actually dealing with coins. It is important for me to lay a solid foundation of financial literacy skills that they will continue to build on for years to come. To help me do this I am requesting five compartment boxes for each student so that they can keep their coin collections handy and organized. I also am asking for coin stamps and stamp pads. Students will stamp out a variety of ways to make a set amount of money. The playing cards will be used to help determine who goes first; whoever draws the larger number goes first. They will also be used to determine how many ways to make a set amount of money. For example, if a three is pulled, students will try and make fifty cents in three different ways. The last thing I am asking for is bear counters. Students will use these as game board pieces as we play money games in our center rotations.
It is important for students to develop a strong sense of financial literacy, and this project will help them do that.
