Our Title I school with a partial magnet for Academically Intellectually Gifted students creates quite the melting pot of cultures attracting families from a large area of the district. This school and its community is one of my favorite places to be, and I always tell people that one of my favorite parts is the diversity and how it's celebrated in the building.
Students come from a wide range of socioeconomic levels, languages and cultural backgrounds eager to create and design.
Our learners range in age from 5 to 11 and our Library is a place where imagination comes alive. Students from all grade levels have shown interest in expressing their creativity, ingenuity, and imagination. These students come to the media center with pure excitement to learn and escape into a world they are designing.
My Project
A Makerspace is a collaborative space for making, learning, exploring and sharing that uses high tech to no tech tools. This is exactly the type of passion we want to drive our students. We are in our first year of designing and starting up our Makerspace, which is housed in our media center. This area will allow students from grades kindergarten to 5th to access their creativity and simply make.
Over time we hope to develop a place that is not just a place to make, but a place where you make "meaning".
We have a great foundation set for our Makerspace and our hopes are to build our collection of supplies and technology so that students have access to a wide range of resources. This will allow for multi-age interaction and access to all levels of capabilities, leaving every student empowered to be inventors.
We are looking to supply students with Perler beads, Keva planks, snap circuits, green screens and legos to help give them a hands-on learning experience and resources to create, make and solve problems with.
