This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I love my students! They are an amazing group of kids that come from all walks of life. I have students in my class that were born from all over the world and English is the second language they have learned. I also have students that are on IEP's and 504 plans, who need accommodations inside and outside of the classroom. I even have one student that receives services under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. Over the last few months, we have created an amazing classroom family that works together everyday to learn and grow.
COVID- 19 has severely impacted the students in my classroom.
My students have been distance learning since March 2020. They came back to the classroom full time August 16th, 2021. Being away from the classroom for so long has led to low test scores in math and reading. We have a lot of learning to do this school year and we are all happy to be doing it in person in the classroom!
My Project
My students are so happy to be back in the classroom! We have a lot of learning to catch up on so we can be ready for middle school. Most of our day will be focused on academics, however, I want to create a space where students can spend time being creative.
By creating a Makerspace, students would have a space in the classroom where they can be engineers and artists!
During COVID, a lot of my students did not have access to art supplies or building blocks , so they did not have a creative outlet. By converting a corner of my classroom into a Makerspace I can give my students a creative space! Being creative stimulates problem solving, imagination and thinking. It also encourages concentration and will allow students to collaborate with one another. The goal of the Makerspace is to give students a productive brain break so that they are focused and engaged when it is time to return to a lesson.
STEM projects in the Makerspace will use standard 3-5 ETS1-1. Art projects will apply the standard VA:Cr1.5.2.
