Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a Title I school with all students on free lunch. A large majority of our students are Hispanic. We have super supportive families that want the best for their children but don't always have the ability to provide hands-on experiences. At our school, our teachers work hard to integrate STEM into all academic content areas. One way to give our students hands-on experiences is to use our school's Makerspace located in our school library. It is a place for hands-on learning with all the tools to create fun projects while learning how to operate specific pieces of equipment.

The STEM skills learned will not only help our students in elementary school, but in middle school, high school, college, and in life.

We want to give our students a hands-on opportunity to create, which is something that they may not get at home. During COVID, collaboration was difficult as was sharing materials, and this will get students excited about using and practicing their STEM skills. We will be selling the student-made items to fundraise in order to take our 5th-grade students on an overnight outdoor school field trip.

My Project

This project meets all engineering standards across grade levels. Due to COVID, our students were not able to work collaboratively. This project allows our students to collaborate and create items that they are proud of. This project also meets all SEL standards because students need to work together, learn social awareness, self-awareness, and responsibility. Our team feels that many of our students have not had these experiences due to COVID and we would like to give them experiences that our students from previous years had. We want our current students to excel through community involvement.
